After finding lots of black pigment I decided to experiment in making my own homemade black ink. I mixing the ink with ethanol, but for a binder I was thinking of using a tiny amount of clear varnish. Can anyone offer any other advice?

The varnish might tend to harden too quickly - unless you use only a small amount and allow the ethanol to dilute it. Can you find any vinyl alcohols? Have a look at http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?WO=2006080984&IA=WO2006080984&DISPLAY=DESC

Why turpentine? what method? do you mean to dissolve/bind the pigment? or instead of using ethanol?
