Percentage Composition of Magnesium Oxide Percent composition: The percent composition of a compound is a relative measure of the mass of each different element present in the compound in which all the elements in the compound adds up to 100%. (Mass of clean empty crucible and lid) - (Mass of crucible, lid, and magnesium) = Mass of Magnesium oxide --------> 22.75 - 22.45 = 0.28g Mass percent of Mg: (Mass of Magnesium sample used/0.28g) x 100% = Percentage of Mg <-- answer for percentage composition (100% - Percentage of Mg) = Percentage of Oxygen <--- answer for percentage composition Calculation of the mass of oxygen that reacted with the magnesium: (Percentage of Oxygen/100%) x 0.28g = mass of Oxygen <--- answer for mass of oxygen reacted Empirical Formula of Magnesium Oxide MgO (because Mg has a +2 charge and O has a -2 charge thus giving MgO)
